How To Stop Procrastination

‘I will do it later’ is a familiar statement especially at the
thought level. In a more practical sense, that ‘later’ becomes another ‘later’.
Postponing tasks is not strange to all of us but it becomes a concern when it
becomes a habit. Procrastination simply has to do with wisdom with respect to
the use of time (Ephesians 5:15).
In the course of relating a parable to emphasize obedience as against
just hearing (Matthew 7:
24-27), Jesus
also pointed out a way to look at wisdom. It could be inferred from Jesus
statement that wisdom is to know what to do and do it. From this,
procrastination can be seen as a folly since what is (known) to be done at a
particular time is not done but habitually pushed forward. It is instructive
that the ‘push’ leads to interruption of the time meant for another thing to be
done. Hence, you have tasks falling on one another leading to a disorganized
life.
We procrastinate majorly because we misappropriate time, which is
a vital resource that is not renewable. Time for task ‘A’ is spent on task ‘B’
and ‘C’. Yet there is supposed to be a time and season for everything under the
sun (Ecclesiastes 3:1). An individual messing up with time does not halt the
time for everyone. The times and seasons would continue with or without such a
person who keeps procrastinating.
At times, people procrastinate because the factors thought
necessary are not in place. The wise man said he that looks at the sky would
not plant (Ecclesiastes 11:4). There are no perfect conditions to do anything,
so stop waiting for the perfect conditions. Once you have the leading of the
Spirit, you could go ahead and not be weighed down by the risks.
Drawing from Newton’s third law of motion that to every action
there is an equal but opposite reaction, we can safely conclude that to every
inaction, which is a negative action, there would be an equal but opposite and
negative reaction. Negative reactions are also known as consequences.
Procrastination comes with many consequences.
Procrastination leads to loss of time, which cannot be regained.
It leads to loss of the opportunities embedded in the time lost or/and that
lost time could have brought. Relative to others, procrastination leads to loss
of progress since there are those who advanced courtesy of the proper usage of
that lost time (Proverbs 20:4).
Bearing in mind that procrastination incurs many losses, it is
expedient to tackle the trend whenever and in whatever direction one notices
it.
The wise man once counseled to go to the ants to learn wisdom
(Proverbs 6:
6-8). One might need to go
out of one’s natural circle to learn this wisdom of doing things timely. In
that aspect you tend to procrastinate, there would be someone who does not. It
is great wisdom to ‘close up’ with such person to learn.
Solomon continued by pointing out that the ants have no leader.
They simply took initiative and responsibility for their lives. In the
corporate settings, it is like the much-promoted ability to work without
supervision. You need not wait to be assigned, prompted or reminded to do
before you do. That is nipping procrastination in the bud.
The ants gather for winter during summer. That is planning and
preparing ahead of time. Time management, which is the antidote to
procrastination, depends on prioritization, which in itself is a function of
correct value placement on every activity. A correct valuation of the
importance and impact of our activities with respect to our ultimate goal(s)
need to be done consciously and continuously as we swim in the sea of
activities.
At times, a change of company might be needed as he that walk with
the wise shall be wise (Proverbs 13:20). Audit those around you to see if they possess
more of the attributes you want to imbibe or those you want to drop. A correct
company should make better after all two are better than one (Ecclesiastes
4:9).
Above all, pray! Yes, pray!
But if any of you lack wisdom, you
should pray to God, who will give it to you; because God gives generously and
graciously to all.
James
1:5 GNB
Trust in the LORD with all your
heart. Never rely on what you think you know. Remember the LORD in everything
you do, and he will show you the right way.
Proverbs 3:5-6 GNB
You can get horses ready for battle,
but it is the LORD who gives victory.
Proverbs 21:31 GNB
Get God involved in your activities to get the required ‘push’ in
your spirit to do and complete what is to be done when it should be done.
